TED Talk: David Griffin

Summary:
David Griffin is the photography director at National Geographic. His TED Talk focused on the importance of photography in bringing light to various issues, whether they be environmental, urban-focused, or global. He focused on the idea that photos should portray a story and showed examples of this from various National Geographic photographers. Many of the stories he told conveyed a powerful message showing various problems in the world such as poaching of elephants for ivory or the exploitation of many impoverished people living in the slums of India, while others served to bring hope and progress. For example, he related a story about a marine sanctuary in which overfished species were able to come back and thrive. These stories all served to show the importance of photography not only in capturing a specific moment but conveying a story.

Reflection:
I enjoyed this TED Talk because I truly experienced a range of emotions when confronted with the various photographic accounts. I appreciated the variety of issues that were tackled even just in the examples that Griffin used in his speech. I felt that they accurately portrayed the breadth and depth that photographers can portray in their photos and various projects.   I was pleasantly surprised by the many ways that photographers utilized different styles to produce a certain reaction and shock viewers.

Connection:
I felt that this particular viewpoint was interesting and intriguing to hear from, considering the projects that we have been doing in Digital Photography 1. I think I would like to be able to convey a powerful and important story through my photography, regardless of the topic. I would like to learn how to compose a series of photographs to show a chronological and logical account

  1. ...you will be able to convey that powerful story - you already have a head start...it's all about how you know your equipment but most importantly, how you look at everything with a different set of eyes.
